Tunneling / Compressed Air Work
Compressed Air Work
Compressed air works are mainly used in tunneling operations. In Hong Kong the compressed air works are governed by the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Work in Compressed Air) Cap 59M Regulations. Under this regulation, it is mandatory for contractors and tunneling companies to appoint a medical practitioner to supervise all medical matters which may arise in connection with the construction work.
Health Issues Related to Compressed Air Work
Health conditions that can arise from compressed air work include:
- pressure related injuries, or barotrauma, in enclosed spaces in the body, such as the middle ear and nasal sinuses; and
- decompression illnesses, also known as the bends.
